Q&A with DJ Rutger Krueger
Q: Where are you from originally, and where did you grow up?
I’ve always been Wisconsin based — originally from the Washington County area. I moved around a lot within that small county and stayed there until I was about 21.
Q: What first got you into DJing?
It’s hard to pinpoint one thing. I was originally making music and performing at venues like Turner Hall. I was also a nightclub promoter for several clubs in downtown Milwaukee. That led me to shout out birthdays and bachelorette parties on the mic, which evolved into MC’ing and being the hype man for other DJs. From there, I started learning their transitions and techniques.
Q: Do you remember your first gig?
Yeah, it was St. Patrick’s Day at Site1a around 2017 or 2018. I had been practicing on the CDJs before hours, and the owner told me, “You’re ready.” That night launched everything—I ended up booking four more gigs that week.
Q: Who were some of your biggest musical influences growing up?
I was all over the place. Rock bands like Linkin Park, Saliva, and Sum 41. On the hip-hop side: Lil Wayne, T.I., Young Dro, Gucci Mane, Royce Da 5’9. And I can’t forget Armin Van Buuren for dance music—he really hooked me.
Q: How would you describe your DJ style?
I’m a true open-format DJ. My weekly schedule might include a college bar, a hip-hop lounge, a house music set, a hipster bar, and a Latin nightclub. I’m proud of mixing it all together for all kinds of crowds.
Q: What’s been your most memorable DJ set so far?
Playing Summerfest three times stands out, but DJing at Gridlife while cars were drifting around Road America was wild too.
Q: How do you set the vibe at an event?
It’s about reading the room early and not going too hard too fast. Build energy slowly so that the peak hour really hits. If something works, build on it. If it doesn’t, pivot quickly.
Q: Have you faced any major challenges in your career?
COVID, no doubt. All clubs were shut down, and DJs don’t get paid days off. I had to sell my dream Jeep to survive. I did livestreams, took song requests for donations, and even delivered for DoorDash and Uber Eats. But I made it through and came back busier than ever.
Q: What’s a milestone that means a lot to you?
Honestly, just being able to pay my bills and live off music I download on my laptop is a massive accomplishment.
Milwaukee & Its Influence
Q: What does Milwaukee mean to you as a creative?
Everything. I love the people, the summers, the nightlife, the food. There’s so much talent and creative energy here—it’s contagious.
Q: Has Milwaukee influenced your sound?
I wouldn’t say it shaped my style directly, but I definitely incorporate local artists like SteveDaStoner, JP, Chicken P, and IshDarr when I can. That’s always been a part of the culture here.
Q: Any Milwaukee venues that shaped your journey?
Definitely Dick’s, Site1a, and 720. They all gave me opportunities and helped me build real connections and friendships.
Q: Any favorite Milwaukee memory?
Milwaukee summers, hands down. The summer the Bucks won the championship especially stands out. The whole city felt united and proud.
Q: What makes Milwaukee’s music and nightlife unique?
Milwaukee has its own sound, especially in hip hop, that’s hard to explain but easy to recognize. Plus, our nightlife is shifting—people are more into hybrid venues with big vibes and no dress codes. I think Milwaukee is ahead of the curve on that.
Looking Ahead
Q: What are your current goals?
I’m learning music production now, especially in dance music. I’ve already done hip-hop, so I’m ready to explore new sounds. I’m also working on getting back out on the road for more out-of-town gigs.
Q: Any upcoming projects you’re excited about?
By the time this comes out, most of my spring events will be done, so it's all about grinding through summer. I’m excited for Summerfest, Gridlife, the 4th of July boat party, and the new summer patio party at Garage with Soppa.
Q: Dream gig—where would you DJ if you could choose anywhere?
A real après-ski party in Europe—like in Italy or Germany during sunset. Also, Japan and Ibiza are on my list.
Q: How do you see your role in Milwaukee’s music scene evolving?
Since hip-hop still faces some venue restrictions, I’m hoping my growth in dance music production opens new doors. I’m ready to be part of something different.
Q: What kind of legacy do you want to leave?
I just want to leave places better than I found them. I want to create environments where strangers become friends, and people can forget the stress of the world for a little while. That’s the impact I want to make.
