1970s – 2000s · Know Your Era
The neck tag is the fastest way to put a year on a Nike piece. Below are the eight labels we run into most on the buy counter, oldest to newest.
Eras are approximate and overlap. Nike ran labels side by side and reused stock, so treat the tag as a starting point and confirm with the whole piece: single stitch hems, the care label, the country of manufacture and the graphic.
Pinwheel Tag
A circular cluster of Swooshes arranged like a pinwheel, usually orange stitching on a navy or blue woven label.
- ·The earliest widely collected Nike neck tag and the one that signals true late-70s production.
- ·Stitched, not printed. The Swoosh cluster sits under block NIKE lettering with a small trademark mark.
- ·Early labels from this window also include the plain NIKE with a single Swoosh variations often called NIKE T.
Orange Tag
Orange Swoosh with blue lettering on a light label, frequently carrying the word SPORTSWEAR.
- ·Runs alongside the pinwheel, so the two overlap in years.
- ·Look for the two-color print: orange Swoosh, blue type. Sizing is often spelled out rather than lettered.
- ·Fabric is usually a soft single-stitch tee or a nylon warm-up shell.
Blue Tag

- ·The mid-80s workhorse tag, common on fleece, warm-ups and tees.
- ·Woven rather than printed, so the lettering has texture you can feel.
- ·Size is usually printed on the same label, sometimes with a chest measurement.
Gray Tag

- ·Bridges the late 80s into the early 90s, the longest running tag in this guide.
- ·The bordered gray rectangle is the tell. Red type, red Swoosh.
- ·Very common on heavyweight crewnecks and early 90s graphic tees.
Black Tag

- ·A short-lived label that sits right before the white tag takes over.
- ·Frequently found on blank-body tees and mid-90s fleece.
- ·Check the care tag underneath, which often carries a year.
White Tag
Black Nike lettering with a red Swoosh on white, in both printed and woven versions.
- ·The classic 90s tag most people picture. Made in U.S.A. examples are the ones to watch for.
- ·Printed versions are softer and fade with wash. Woven versions hold their edges.
- ·Size grid printed below the logo, frequently with three-language sizing.
Red + Black Tag

- ·Late 90s. The split into two stacked labels is the quickest way to spot it.
- ·Common on athletic department pieces, center swoosh tees and team fleece.
- ·The size label is its own strip rather than part of the main tag.
Silver Tag
A tonal Swoosh on a silver-gray label, early to mid 2000s.
- ·Where vintage starts shading into modern. Still collectible for the right graphic.
- ·The Swoosh is printed in the same family as the label, so contrast is low.
- ·Check the care label for a country and date code to narrow the year.
